Benefits of using Plugins with WordPress for Your Website

by Kim Beasley 2006 (c)

When using WordPress as your choice of web design software, you have the option of adding plugins. Different types of plugins exist to give special functionality to a WordPress web site. Some of the areas that WordPress plugins provide functionality are web traffic, website feeds, or even showing related posts.

The plugins used on A3 Web Design web site are:

  • Adhesive: Allows easy marking of sticky posts in WordPress 2.0. Licensed under the MIT License, Copyright 2005 Owen Winkler. By Owen Winkler
  • Akismet: Akismet checks your comments against the Akismet web serivce to see if they look like spam or not. You need a WordPress.com API key to use this service. You can review the spam it catches under “Manage” and it automatically deletes old spam after 15 days.
  • aLinks: A WordPress plugin that automatically links keywords in your blog post. By Sean Hickey.
  • Angsuman’s Feed Copyrighter: Inserts copyright message in Feeds. The message is of the standard format (can be customized): Copyright © 2005 YOUR BLOG NAME. This Feed is for personal non-commercial use only. If you are not reading this material in your news aggregator, the site you are looking at is guilty of copyright infringement.
  • Digital Fingerprint: This plugin enables you to easily and quickly search the web for potential cases of plagiarism and content theft. It works by adding a customizable “digital fingerprint” to your RSS feed in posts that you select (or all posts if you wish). You can then easily monitor the blogosphere for your digital fingerprint in the hopes of finding potential content thieves and scrapers abusing your content. By Kirk Montgomery.
  • Jerome’s Keywords: Allows keywords to be associated with each post. These keywords can be used for page meta tags, included in posts for site searching or linked like Technorati tags. By Jerome Lavigne.
  • Naatan.com Notify Me: Allows you to create as many mailing lists as you want and put the forms where ever you want. By Nathan.
  • PXS Mail Form: Creates a mail form with multi part verification, various messages and an auto redirect on successful send. Originally based on the contact form by Ryan Duff. Recent updates include referrer checks, exploit management and the ability to run with the Markdown plugin. New feature for this release allows the sender to CC themselves. By Shane Marriott.
  • Related Posts: Returns a list of the related entries based on active/passive keyword matches. By Alexander Malov, Mike Lu & Jon Bourne.
  • Text Link Ads v2: Really Simple Web/RSS Advertising For Personal or Commercial Use By Justin Klemm & Matthew Drouin.
